German officers of the 955th Regiment that had defended Cisterna are escorted to the rear by an American infantryman carrying an M1 carbine. The Nazi officers carry briefcases with some of their belongings for their stay in prisoner stockades. (USAMHI)

German youths were among many of the Nazis that surrendered to infantrymen of the US 3rd Division at Cisterna in late May after the Anzio break-out. These soldiers from the Wehrmacht 114th Jäger Division had been guarding against an Allied amphibious landing on the Adriatic Sea as well as fighting Italian partisans in northern Italy, before hastily being deployed to seal the Allied bridgehead at Anzio. Many of the divisional units in the Fourteenth Army were reconstituted to combat strength from a variety of German manpower pools, including young teenagers. (USAMHI)
